5/8-Inch Pitch Stainless Sprocket — More Load Than #40, Simpler Than Going Duplex

ANSI 50 stainless steel sprocket (15.875 mm pitch) in 304 or 316 SS — the engineered answer when a single-strand #40 SS drive approaches its power limit. 60% more allowable tension than #40 without doubling your hardware cost. Replaces Rexnord, Tsubaki, and Renold #50 carbon or SS units on food, chemical, and washdown applications.

Description

Hangzhou Ever-Power Sprocket Co., Ltd.

When a #40 SS drive is running at its limit, engineers face two routes: add a second strand (duplex), or move up to #50 pitch. Each has a different cost and complexity profile. This page explains how to choose between them.

Two Routes When Your #40 Drive Is Overloaded

An ANSI 40 single-strand drive can handle approximately 14 kN maximum chain tension under moderate-speed operation. When process changes push the drive beyond that ceiling — higher throughput, heavier product, faster conveyor speed — the chain elongates faster than the replacement schedule allows, and sprocket tooth tips begin to round under the excess load. At that point, the engineering team has a genuine decision to make: convert to 40-2 duplex (adding a second strand of #40 chain, roughly doubling power capacity) or upgrade to #50 pitch (larger chain, single strand, ~60% more capacity). Neither answer is universally correct. The choice depends on shaft centre distance flexibility, available sprocket hub width, and how much capacity headroom the drive needs going forward.

Single-Strand #50 vs. Duplex #40 — The Engineering Trade-Offs

Factor #50 Single Strand #40 Duplex (40-2)
Capacity vs #40 single ~60% more tension ~90% more tension
Sprocket width Single row — narrower Double row — wider hub needed
Centre-to-centre change May require adjustment Usually stays same
Drive alignment sensitivity Standard More critical — both strands must load equally
Chain cost ~1.3× #40 single ~2× #40 single
Best when 60% uplift is enough; hub width is limited Near-double capacity needed; centres fixed

Drive Sizing: Speed Ratio and Tooth Count Selection for #50

Good drive design for #50 pitch follows the same principles as any roller chain drive, with a few specific recommendations that extend service life in SS food-grade applications:

Driver Tooth Count

Minimum 17T for smooth chain engagement. 19T or 21T (odd counts) gives even wear distribution across all chain links — recommended for long-interval food applications.

Speed Ratio

Keep single-stage ratio at or below 7:1. Above this, a two-stage reduction is more efficient — it reduces the load on the slow-speed chain strand and extends both chain and sprocket life.

Centre Distance

30–50 pitches of centre distance is the practical optimum. This gives adequate chain wrap on the driver (≥ 120°) and a chain sag that self-tensions without over-stressing the bearings.

Customer Reviews

★★★★★

“The engineering team chose single-strand #50 over 40-2 duplex based on hub-width constraints. Ever-Power supplied matched SS sprockets and chain — the drive has run without issues for 14 months in our tunnel washer application.”

— Mechanical Engineer, Commercial Laundry, UAE
★★★★★

“We asked Ever-Power to do the drive calculation from our motor data. They came back with tooth counts, chain length, and a taper-lock bushing recommendation. Everything fitted as calculated on the first installation.”

— Design Engineer, Conveyor OEM, Germany
★★★★☆

“Good quality product, delivered on time. A stocked range of the most common 17T and 19T configurations would be useful for emergency orders — currently everything is made to order.”

— Maintenance Planner, Seed Processing, Australia

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I know if my #40 drive is at its load limit? +
Key indicators: chain elongation exceeding 3% before the scheduled replacement interval, accelerating chain replacement frequency (shortening interval over successive replacements), visible tooth-tip rounding on the driver sprocket within 3 months. Any of these points to an overloaded drive.
2. Can a #50 sprocket run #50H heavy-series chain? +
Yes — #50H shares the pitch and outer plate dimensions of standard #50 and runs on the same sprocket. #50H has heavier link plates for higher fatigue life. Specify #50H chain for drives running near the upper end of the #50 power rating.
3. What is the maximum single-stage reduction for a #50 SS drive? +
Keep the ratio at or below 7:1 for a single stage. At higher ratios, the large driven sprocket becomes unwieldy in size, the slow-strand tension becomes very high, and overall efficiency drops. Use a two-stage approach above 7:1.
4. Do you offer the complete drive calculation service at no charge? +
Yes. Send your motor power (kW), input RPM, required output RPM, shaft diameters (driver and driven), and any centre-distance constraints. We return a recommended drive arrangement with tooth counts, chain length, and component part numbers within 24 hours — no charge, no obligation.
5. What are the lead times for custom tooth counts? +
10–15 working days for non-catalogue tooth counts and bore sizes. Duplex configurations (50-2) add approximately 3–5 days. Contact us early if the installation date is fixed.
