#50 Stainless Steel Sprocket | ANSI 50 — When #40 Is Not Enough

ANSI 50 stainless steel sprocket (5/8″ pitch) in 304 or 316 SS — the engineered sweet spot between the #40 and #60 families. Replaces Rexnord, Tsubaki, and Renold #50 sprockets in high-throughput food, packaging, and washdown applications that have outgrown their #40 drive.

Description

Hangzhou Ever-Power Sprocket Co., Ltd.

Engineers upgrading an overloaded #40 SS drive face a straight choice: add a strand, or move up a pitch. Here is when moving to #50 is the right call — and how to verify it.

When an #40 Drive Is Pushed Too Hard

The warning signs of an overloaded #40 stainless chain drive are always the same: accelerating chain elongation (the chain stretches faster than expected because every pin-bushing interface is working at or above design stress), early tooth-tip wear visible on the driver sprocket, and chain-link fatigue cracking at the outer plate holes. Before replacing the same hardware on the same cycle, it is worth asking whether the drive was undersized from the start or whether the process has evolved — faster conveyor speeds, heavier product loads, longer duty cycles — and the drive has not kept up. Moving from #40 to the ANSI 50 pitch (15.875 mm / 5/8 inch) increases allowable chain tension by roughly 60% in a single change, while keeping the overall drive size more compact than the jump to #60 would require.

Understanding the trade-offs between adjacent chain sizes helps engineers make the right call without trial and error:

Lubrication Strategy for SS #50 Drives in Washdown Environments

Stainless steel does not corrode, but the chain-sprocket contact interface still generates heat and wear without lubrication — corrosion resistance and wear resistance are separate properties. For food-grade applications, NSF H1-certified mineral oil via drip lubrication is the standard solution for enclosed drives. In open drives subject to frequent washdown, food-grade PTFE dry-film spray applied to the chain strand before each cleaning cycle is preferred — it tolerates washing without re-oiling during production. Avoid silicone-based lubricants on stainless chain drives: silicone does not provide adequate boundary lubrication at the pin-bushing interface and can cause premature chain elongation even at modest loads.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I know if my #40 drive is undersized? +
Key indicators: chain elongation exceeding 3% before the scheduled replacement interval, visible tooth-tip rounding on the driver sprocket after less than 6 months, or chain-link cracking near the outer plate holes. Any of these means the drive is running over its design load and a pitch upgrade should be evaluated.
2. Is #50 chain interchangeable with #50H heavy series? +
Yes — both share the same pitch and outer plate dimensions and run on the same sprocket. #50H uses thicker link plates and a heavier roller for higher fatigue life. Our standard #50 SS sprockets accept both #50 and #50H chain without modification.
3. Should I switch pitches or add a second strand to handle more load? +
A second strand (duplex) increases load capacity by ~90% with the same sprocket diameter, while a pitch increase also raises centre-to-centre requirements. If shaft centres are fixed and cannot be moved, adding a strand is often easier. If you have freedom on centres, a pitch upgrade simplifies the hardware to a single strand. We can assist with both options — contact us with your drive data.
4. What surface finish is standard on #50 SS sprockets? +
Standard is as-machined (Ra ≤ 3.2 µm on tooth flanks). Mechanical polish (Ra ≤ 1.6 µm) and electropolish (Ra ≤ 0.8 µm) are available at request. Passivation per ASTM A967 is included free of charge for food and pharma orders.
5. Can I get split #50 SS sprockets for retrofit without shaft disassembly? +
Yes. Two-piece split SS sprockets are available as custom orders for retrofit situations where removing the shaft would require significant machine teardown. Provide tooth count, bore size, and hub length and we will produce a split design.
